قال الإمام البربهاري رحمه الله :
اعلموا أن الإسلام هو السنَّة، والسنَّة هي الإسلام، ولا يقوم أحدهما إلَّا بالآخَر...
وذلك أنَّ السنَّة والجماعة قد أحكما أمر الدين كلِّه وتبيَّن للناس، فعلى الناس الاتِّباع.

قال أبو بكر المَرُّوْذِي قلت لأبي عبدالله -يعني الإمام أحمد بن حنبل-
" يا إمام من مات على الإسلام و السنة ، مات على الخير ؟ "
قال : ( اسكت ، بل مات على الخير كله )
